The programme of visits for 2023 is complete. We planned to have 3 visits over early summer to autumn period.
The first visit was to Argaty (Doune, https://argatyredkites.co.uk) on Monday 12th June. The visit explored ‘rewilding’ on a farming estate. Members went a farm walk to view the beaver colony and wildlife viewing hides. Following lunch and discussion, members took part in a wild life viewing tour.
The second visit took place on 25th August. The morning session concentrated on rural/agriculture and food education. Members met at Craigies farm, South Queensferry (https://craigies.co.uk) and started a talk from a representative of RHET followed by with a farm walk/tour from the owner. After lunch members visited Dick Vet at Bush estate to see animal welfare education initiatives hosted by Prof Cathy Dwyer.
The final visit for Scotia Agricultural Club this year (11th October) took in Southfield Farm (https://www.innovis.org.uk/) to learn about current sheep genetics following the move of Innovis nuclear flock relocation to this farm from West Wales; this was followed by a visit to Standhill Farm (https://www.standhillfarm.co.uk/) looking in particular at tomato production under glass using heating from wood chips that had been dried using energy from a biogas (anaerobic digestor) generator.
